Amazing anatomy of koala teeth

The dental structure of koalas, and marsupials more generally, is tailored precisely to the demands of their diets.

Koalas possess sharp, chisel-like incisors at the front of their mouths. These specialised teeth act as delicate scissors for snipping leaves from branches. Directly behind these you find a gap. This gap is called the diastema. It is followed by robust premolars and molars. These flat, ridged chewing teeth are designed for slicing, crushing, and grinding tough foliage. By grinding to a paste, they turn fibrous eucalyptus leaves into a digestible pulp. The molars’ intricate ridges align perfectly, acting much like millstones as the koala chews.

Herbivorous marsupials like koalas, wombats, and kangaroos share a similar tooth structure. Evolution shows that the presence of prominent incisors and strong, ridged molars is perfect for snipping and grinding plants.  This specialised dental architecture allows koalas to thrive on diets that would challenge other mammals.
