Beautiful Honeydew: A Poem by Carolyn Coburn

Koala Gardens 2025 Wild Koala Day Poetry Competition

There was once a beautiful tree melon
Who grew up without a mother
But some Friends helped her out
    And gave her another
Chance to live wild it’s true
    She’s a gorgeous koala
    And her name is Honeydew

A close up of the left profile of young female koala Honeydew. her eyes are open, the texture and shading of her thick fur can be seen.

    Once she was sick
    But then she was cured
With the help of human friends
    Her health is assured
Now she’s free to live, jump, and play
    Eat tons of leaf
    And sleep all day
    She’s growing up strong
    With hope in her eyes
    We can see her thriving
    And we aren’t surprised

Against a background of leaves and facing right, young female koala Honeydew if in the fork of a tree, looking over her right shoulder to camera. Her eyes are open and her young face looks alert.

    An amazing koala girl
    With a future so bright
    Her cute fluffy ears
    Fills our lives with light
    She has a new home
Where we can see her today
    Where there are trees galore
    It’s Koala Gardens to stay
Never to worry about trees or leaf
    Fast moving machines
    Or barking creatures with teeth

young female koala holding onto a tree trunk and looking over her left shoulder to camera. Her eyes are open and she looks alert.

She’ll always have a home there
    To live as she bids
To stay as long she likes
    Or maybe raise some kids
    Do as you like, Honeydew
    We’ll be watching to see
    You living so well
    Totally wild and free
