Ellie

Ellie was first seen at Koala Gardens in October, 2020.  This is towards the end of the dispersion time, and it is likely that she had not long separated from her mum. She grew into a strong healthy koala with spectacular ears.

Facing right with her head turned to camera, Ellie koala is shown in a tree holding onto a narrow, pale grey, vertical branch in front of her. The light highlights her grey fur. Obscured only by two branches in the top left corner of the picture, her full face can be seen as can her very large ears. Her eyes are partially open.
With her back to camera and against a background of leaves, Ellie is sitting in a eucalyptus tree. She is looking over her left shoulder. Her eyes are open and she looks alert and focused, perhaps on a possible meal.
Ellie is shown in close up, facing the camera, wedged in the fork of a tree. She is holding onto the right hand, angled branch with both left paws her front right paw is in the V of the fork, her right hand is splayed, showing her sharp claws. A small, broken branch is poking out under her arm. Her head fill the entire gap between the two parts of the fork. Her eyes are partially open, her very large, fluffy ears are in full view.

It is wonderful that she settled in to Koala Gardens. We see her regularly on the property now. In 2022, to our great delight, she introduced us to her first joey Eddie.

Shown against a background of leaves and facing left, Ellie is sitting in a tree with her 2022 joey Eddie on her back. Ellie is holding onto a branch is front of her and is looking forward. Eddie has his head turned to camera and the right side of his face is pressed up against Ellie left ear. Both Ellie and Eddie have pale grey fur, the white fur of Eddie is also shown.

She is looing over her right shoulder to the left, showcasing her dark nose, white chin and large fluffy ears. As Ellie holds on to the vertical branch in front of her with all four paws, her 2022 male joey Eddie is peering over her right arm, giving a view of the left side of his little joey face. Both koalas have their eyes open and look alert.

In 2023 Ellie showed us that she had another joey in pouch. Imagine our excitement and delight when, late in the year, we got our first sightings of Ellie new bundle of joy Elmo (see video below)

Sadly, in July 2024, Katrina noticed that Ellie had developed chlamydial conjunctivitis in one eye, and it took a week of following her until she was in a tree where she could trapped to take her to the koala hospital. Her other eye was then infected. When she was examined under anaesthetic, it was discovered that the chlamydia had already spread to her reproductive system and it was not possible for her to be saved.

We are all devastated at the loss of beautiful Ellie, who we had hoped to see have many more joeys at Koala Gardens. At the same time we are grateful for the wonderful legacy she has left in her sons Eddie and Elmo.

Ellie has lots of video (with and without her joeys on YouTube and even has her very own playlist (below). She appears in the Koala Gardens Happenings for 2020, 2021, 2022 , 2023 and 2024
