Koala Gardens Patrons’ Top 10 Reasons to Save Koalas – Reason 4
Koalas are now listed as endangered– another step closer to extinction. if they go extinct, they are gone forever. Extinction is the end of the road.
What a chilling thought that is.
There is only around 1 to 2% of the original wild koala population left now. Koalas are in serious trouble and are soon going to pass a tipping point.

It is not unduly alarmist to say – if we don’t take saving wild koalas seriously now, we will hit a point when it is too late to take it seriously.
There will still be captive populations. However, these are small genetically and will also be impacted if they become the last of the species. For this reason and because of the quality of life of a wild animal to be held in captivity, this can never be the answer. Koalas need trees!

Predictions
Predictions in 2015 said that koalas would be extinct in the wild by 2050. In 2020, the New South Wales Parliamentary Inquiry into Koalas found that koalas will become extinct before 2050 if urgent action isn’t taken to protect their habitat. In 2022 koalas were listed as endangered.
Noticeably, there has been a distinct lack of updates on those predictions since the fires that we had in 2019. Multiple millions of wildlife were killed, and 19 million hectares of native bush was destroyed very quickly. There is no way this has not had an impact on those predictions. This means that we are likely to see koalas extinct in the wild significantly earlier than the predicted date of 2050.

Climate change and habitat loss is an issue for us all, not just for the Australian government and people. This is a global issue. We won’t really save koalas by doing a few things differently just along the east coast of Australia.
If we don’t take it seriously and do something now, when do we think we’re going to have a chance to do that.
