Fact # 12 – Foot Thumbs

A close up of a koala foot with text that reads: Save the koala September Fact # 12 Koalas also have one thumb on each foot. Wait! That's six thumbs?

    Katrina says:

SAVE the Koala September FACT 12.

You almost could say koalas are ‘all thumbs’ because they also have a well defined opposable thumb on their foot. This really gives them a big advantage in the tree tops as they can hold onto branches with their feet alone and use their hands to gather bunches of leaves to their mouth.

Notice that the foot thumb is the only digit that has no claw?
