Fact # 2 – Astonishing that koala names mean “No Drink”

Across the continent, the koala’s identity is woven into the ancient tapestry of Aboriginal languages. So much so that each offers its own name for this iconic animal. There are hundreds of distinct tongues spoken by First Nations peoples. As a result, the koala is known by many local words. But, intriguingly, almost all carry a meaning akin to “no drink.”

This reflects a remarkable fact about koala biology. They seldom descend to sip water from streams or pools. Instead, their bodies have evolved to extract almost all the moisture they need from eucalyptus leaves. Thus, they are able to thrive high in the canopy where free water is scarce.

The koala’s various Aboriginal names, echo the notion of “no drink”. Thus, their name captures not only their habitat but the wisdom of those who observed them for countless generations.

It took Europeans a long time to understand how unique koalas are. Conversely, our First Nations people have known it for eons. Not only that, they have revered and protected them all this time too.
