Katrina says:
SAVE the Koala September FACT 28.
Koalas carry almost no fat throughout their bodies. Not among their limb muscles, and not even around their internal organs. One thing fat does is help to keep you warm. Body fat can also provide some emergency energy.
It is why their insulating fur is so important. Imagine being out in the trees during winter without a thick coat. No thank you!
Another thing body fat does is help protect the muscles. This is the main why koalas are often so badly injured by dogs. Even if the skin is not broken, the muscles beneath can be shredded.
Even a koala that looks round and fat, isn’t really ‘fat’ at all. But that fur coat is the best in the world. Hence, even without body fat, koalas stay warm all winter.
Additionally, their coat isn’t just warm, it insulates. This means, it also keeps them cool in the summer.
