Fact # 4 – it’s crazy but koalas look just like a pink jelly bean at birth!

Marsupials are marvellously amazing! Instead of a long pregnancy with an umbilical cord, the tiny little pink joey is born after just 35 days. At this time it is just the size of a jellybean.

Thus, born blind, earless, and with only the barest hint of limbs, this miniature marvel embarks on its first journey. Bravely it clambers up its mother’s furred belly. Little joey is drawn by instinct and smell towards the warm, dark safety of the pouch. There, concealed from the world in a place as old as time, the joey latches onto a teat and begins to drink. This life-giving milk nourishes joey during the next 6 months of transformation.

And so, day by day, the joey grows, hidden in its furred sanctuary. Slowly, distinct features emerge. Fur that will blend seamlessly with the soft branches above covers its body.

Finally, this remarkable method of motherhood is shared by koalas and all their marsupial kin. Can you believe it?
