Fact # 7 – nature’s most sensational substance is koala pap

There are many marvels of koala motherhood. One of the most extraordinary is how a joey learns to digest its singular diet of eucalyptus leaves. Eucalyptus is toxic to most animals. And yet, koalas have a remarkable bacterial arsenal to unlock its nutrients.

But joeys aren’t born with this essential microbiome. Instead, they receive it through a fascinating maternal adaptation.

Around the time a joey first ventures from the pouch, mum produces a special substance known as “pap.” This gooey, nutrient-rich mixture is unlike any other marsupial secretion. It teems with beneficial bacteria. These bacteria are specifically adapted to breaking down eucalyptus toxins and fibres.

Joey eats pap for a week or two. These meals inoculate its caecum. This then prepares its digestive system for the leafy diet ahead.  Only after this short, transformative period can joey begin to consume whole eucalyptus leaves on its own.

Without pap, joey simply couldn’t survive its species’ exclusive diet. This is an intimate transfer of nature’s magic. Going from mother to young this way is unique. Hence, koala pap is vital for the survival of each new generation.
