Fact # 8 – Secrets of the koalas colossal powerhouse!

Unlike humans, whose caecum is a tiny thing the size of my little finger called the appendix, koalas possess a truly extraordinary digestive organ. Known as the caecum, it is a whopping two metres in length.

This cavernous chamber is the true engine of their digestive prowess. After pap seeds the joey’s gut with the right bacteria, the caecum becomes a fermenting vat, teeming with billions of specialised microbes.  These microscopic allies work tirelessly to break down the fibrous eucalyptus leaves, unlocking nutrients and neutralising toxins that would be indigestible—even deadly—for most other creatures.

The result? A healthy koala sports a notably round belly, a visible testament to the bustling microcosm within, and the vital role of this remarkable organ in the story of koala survival. Next time you see a koala photo and think they are fat, think again, that’s all a powerhouse!
