Beautiful orphan Honeydew is free!

Honeydew was found sitting on road near a precarious bend around midnight one night in September 2024. The person who found her simply walked over and picked her up – not something you can usually do with a koala! They called the Friends of the Koala hotline and kept her quiet overnight in a large cardboard box where she was very quiet.

When she was examined at Friends of the Koala  she was found to  have a little bit of blood in the abdomen and a shoulder injury.  She could have fallen from a tree, or been tapped by a car. The injuries were minor, but she was around 9 months old and without her mum.

Thanks to the person who called the hotline Honeydew’s luck was about to change and she was raised and nurtured at Friends of the Koala, where she put on at least a kilogram in weight. Before release was vaccinated against chlamydia which will hopefully reduce her chances of disease for a while.

On 1st January, 2025 Honeydew, now the picture of health, was transferred into the kindy at Koala Gardens. What a great start to the New year for Honeydew and for Katrina!

    Kindy Days

In the kindy Honeydew got her first experience of being alone in trees and begun to get ready for a life as a wild koala. Honeydew was released into the wild directly from the kindy at Koala Gardens.

Katrina opened the gate to allow her to leave. She seemed to like the kindy so much it took her five nights to finally come out!

Immediately after leaving the kindy, Honeydew started to move through the trees in the plantation and has been moving between the biggest trees and smaller plantation trees since then.

    Back to hospital

In March, she suddenly developed conjunctivitis. Katrina acted immediately. She caught her and got her to the hospital for treatment. It took some time as Chlamydia is insidious.

However, the treatment was successful and Honeydew is back home!

Honeydew appears in the Koala Gardens Happenings for 2025 and has her own playlist on YouTube (below).
