It’s amazing that saving koalas will help protect Biodiversity.

Koala Gardens Patrons’ Top 10 Reasons to Save Koalas – Reason 7

We need to protect bio-diverse eco-systems

Protecting koala habitat means protecting existing eco-systems . Everything from apex predators to the smallest organisms are important. They all have their role to play and all are inter-related.

The more diversity there is, the more robust the eco-system and the more connected things are. This will also encourage increased genetic diversity. Robust systems encourage connectivity.

Genetic diversity is biological diversity that occurs within a species. The diversity in this case refers to the variations that will occur within a species. It is important because it increases possibilities for species to adapt to the environment when it changes.

Biodiversity is the variety of all forms of life on earth. The different plants, animals, microorganisms and the eco-systems that they are part of.

The more connectivity there is, the more diversity there is in robust forests and systems.  When we have connectivity, koalas thrive as they are able to move through the landscape freely. This movement increases genetic diversity. The more fragmentation, the more koala colonies become isolated. This isolation results in inbreeding.

Koalas are an umbrella species. Because of this we know that by protecting koala habitat, we increase biodiversity throughout the eco-system.  A robust eco-system is more resilient to climate change.

Through increased bio-diversity we are protecting the environment. Increased robustness can slow down and reverse climate change, it will have a ripple effect and help us all to survive – we are all connected!
