Saving Koalas is Culturally Important

Koala Gardens Patrons’ Top 10 Reasons to Save Koalas – Reason 10

    Koalas are culturally important.

Koalas are culturally important to Australia’s First Nations People. We know now that koalas are an important umbrella species.

For many First Nations people the koala is a totem. Conversely, for others, the koala is simply part of the ecosystem.  Together with other native species like  kangaroo, wallaby, turkey, goanna, and possum, they are seen as a valid, but respected food source.

The First Nations People looked after the ecosystem with the full knowledge of the important place of the koala. As a result, after around 75, 000 years of their being in Australia together, the koala remained abundant and healthy. This demonstrates how they respected the koala.

The koala is featured in Dreamtime stories and was revered by all Nations, even if where they are not totem.

Koalas are frequently featured in their artwork.

One of the first strategies after colonisation was to cut off the First Nations People from their culture, language and resources.

By separating the people from Country the invaders proceeded to make any changes they desired. They did this without any understanding of or having any regard for their impact.

If we were to wipe out koalas we would be wiping out another critical part of traditional culture that can never be returned to these incredible people. The custodians who have always understood what life is truly all about. The koala represents this so perfectly.

To be healthy in body and mind means to live in harmony “with Country”. This is perfectly exemplified by the koala living high in the treetops.
