Smokey

Born in late 2018, Smokey is the son and last joey of Racee. A very healthy joey ,he was named by Koala Gardens’ Facebook followers in September, 2019 when the first local fires of the 2019/2020 “Black Summer” Bushfire Season began.

On 6 December, Racee separated from Smokey for 3 days and she went somewhere else for that time to give birth to her next joey.  When she returned Smokey stayed around her, but most often in a different tree, gradually becoming completely independent.

Facing right, Racee is sitting in a fork in a tree holding her joey Smokey in her lap. Smokey’s young joey face is seen as he rests his chin on his mum’s right arm. Racee’s face is hidden by her joey.

He stayed at Koala Gardens until around mid. February, 2020, when he moved on to find his own home range. Hopefully he found a safe place to settle and will go on to produce many more joeys and help secure the future of wild koalas in Australia.

Smokey is part of a Koala Gardens dynasty. His  mother Racee had two other joeys at Koala Gardens, Karla in 2017  and Phoenix in 2018. Phoenix has, in turn,  introduced us to Luna, born in 2021 and Grace born in 2022.

Smokey has lots of videos on YouTube  where he  has his own playlist. (below) and also appears in the Koala Gardens Happenings for 2019 and 2020.
