Koalas, unlike nearly all other mammals, subsist almost entirely on eucalyptus leaves. These leaves are laced with toxic compounds similar to cyanide.
The feat is not a matter of mere tolerance but of extraordinary adaptation. Their heavily ridged molar teeth grind the fibrous leaves into a fine paste. This paste exposes as many nutrients as possible to the digestive tract. Once swallowed, the paste continues to the koala’s elongated and coiled caecum. This is a specialised chamber branching off the intestine. It is important because it hosts a thriving population of bacteria. These microscopic allies break down stubborn plant fibres, wringing sustenance from a diet that would poison most creatures.
Yet the true marvel lies deeper, in the complex, multi-lobed structure of the koala’s liver. This organ, in koalas, is more intricate than that of many other mammals. Their liver is a silent sentinel against the plant’s chemical arsenal. Specialized enzymes in the liver isolate and dismantle the toxic compounds. They are then converted into harmless by-products that are expelled through urine and faeces.
This is a process of delicate alchemy. This process allows koalas to flourish out the toxins that would be fatal to nearly any other animal. In this, the koala’s digestive symphony—grinding, fermenting, detoxifying—reveals a masterpiece of natural engineering.
